When we read to our children, they tune in to the sound of our voice or seek out our movements and expressions. To the adults’ eyes, it sounds so simple. But to our children, they are adjusting to the new discovery of sound like speaking, reading, or conversing. Their ears are straining trying to decipher a language that they never knew and takes clues to what it means. Their eyes flicker following gestures, facial expressions, or breathing in between. Everything is new and each time we read, they learn something.
The thing is, the more and the richer the books we read to them impacts their love for reading and the quality of books they want to read as they grow older. The best type of books for babies to start are board books as they explore books using their hands, gums, tongue, or teeth. It reduces the chance of getting a precious book torn into pieces as they will definitely throw, sit, stomp, or however your babies want to learn with it. I’ve seen a much older baby around 18 months of age rip paperback books so it’s always good to have a sturdy literature that lasts around the house.
The content of the book for each developmental stage is key in continuously nourishing our children’s mind. For babies from birth to 18 months up to 2 years, books featuring rhymes, rhythm, and repetition leaves our children mesmerised to hear for more. For adults, this is like listening to a speaker from a Ted talk series in a subject that is of interest to us. They hear a catchy rhythm so they focus to find if there are any patterns. They also hear new words or rare rhymes used in a book that we don’t normally use in conversations.

Eric Carle has a number of books and this is one of the big hits. The story is easy to follow and there are a lot of creative things we can do to tell this story. This book is a good STEM resource for older children as they can learn the life cycle of a butterfly, counting items, or classifying items. A very good investment to start and will last years
2 / We’re Going on A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury
If you like singing and moving around, I think this book is for you. It is such a lively book telling the story of a family who went on a bear hunt. This is also a good addition to your STEM library as it talks about different terrains such as a grass, river, forest, or snow. Watch your child grow and sing with you a couple of years down the road.

One of our favourite bedtime stories as this was given as a Christmas gift to our daughter when she started childcare. We’ve read it almost every night that my husband and I have imprinted this in our brain and gives us good memories of our night cuddles together. There’s nothing cuter than saying “I could eat your little ears, I could nibble on your nose” when your baby is about to go to sleep and you know how we love our children when they do sleep.
